Kenny Dalglish has called for a line to be drawn under the Luis Suarez affair as Liverpool prepare to visit Manchester United on Saturday.

This weekend is likely to see the Uruguay international come up against United for the first time since his eight-match ban for racially abusing defender Patrice Evra.

The teams have already met, in the Reds' FA Cup fourth-round win at Anfield last month, but the encounter at Old Trafford has the potential to be particularly hostile atmosphere towards the striker who finally made his comeback in Monday's draw at home to Tottenham.

That game threatened to re-open the simmering tensions between the two clubs and sets of fans after United striker Wayne Rooney wrote on Twitter he felt Suarez should have been sent off and not just booked for kicking Scott Parker in the stomach.

Equally, Dalglish's assertion in his post-match interviews that he felt the player should never have been banned in the first place could have been viewed by some as antagonistic.

But the Scot, who confirmed Suarez would shake the hands of Evra and all the United players, has called for a "responsible" approach.
Draw a line

"Everyone involved, including the media, the supporters and both teams have a responsibility to ensure this weekend is remembered as a cracking game of football between two very good sides, rather than for anything else," he told Liverpool's official website.

"I thought everyone involved in the FA Cup tie at Anfield played their part in making sure that the match was played in the right way, so let's make sure that happens again this weekend.

"I'm sure people will want to talk about Luis Suarez but he accepted his ban, served his suspension and returned against Spurs on Monday.

"It's time for all of us to draw a line under what happened and move forward.

"People are already speculating on the pre-match ceremony, but from Luis' point of view we have spoken to him and I know he will shake the hand of Patrice Evra and the other Manchester United players before the game."

TEAM NEWS

Everton remain without the injured Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin, Seamus Coleman, Jack Rodwell and Leon Osman.

Ross Barkley played for the under-18s at the weekend but is still recovering from a knee problem.

Manchester City welcome back captain Vincent Kompany from suspension, but Mario Balotelli still has three games of a four-match ban to serve.

Brothers Yaya and Kolo Toure remain on international duty with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.

MATCH PREVIEW

Another matchday, another Merseyside v Manchester encounter. Would it be too much to ask for more of the drama that the cup battles of the last week served up?

The only sure thing is that we'll get the same big-match atmosphere, with the Goodison public just as keen as their red neighbours to see visitors from the rival city sent back east with nothing.

It all points to a combustible clash on the pitch and possibly on the touchline too. Imaginary card-waving is definitely not advised

The picture has changed dramatically for Manchester City in the first month of 2012. With respect to the Europa League, they've now only got one all consuming goal for the season - winning the Premier League that they've led for so long.

On that front, business is still good for City as they chase a fourth successive league victory. The third, against Spurs, was just the sort of late win that champions somehow come up with when the pressure's on. Thinking about Jermaine Defoe's miss moments before Mario Balotelli's penalty that won it, and the "did he or didn't he?" 'stamp' from the matchwinner himself, you could also argue that it carried an element of luck - something else champions need.

Everton need to improve their league form, having won just one of the last six they've played in the top flight. Strangely for David Moyes' side, winning at home has proved especially difficult this season, with only three Goodison Park successes (against Wigan, Wolves and Swansea).

But the cup win over Fulham sees them go into the game in good heart and their record against City is better than most in recent years. Moyes has got the better of Mancini in four of five previous meetings, including inflicting upon the Italian his first defeat as City manager two years ago.

There doesn't seem to be a great deal of love lost between the bosses, and Moyes hasn't been enamoured with City in general ever since their pursuit and signing of Joleon Lescott. It all points to a combustible clash on the pitch and possibly on the touchline too. Imaginary card-waving is definitely not advised.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • Manchester City have managed just two wins at Goodison Park in 14 Premier League visits.
  • This is the 170th meeting between the sides. Everton have won 64, Manchester City 63 and there have been 42 draws.
  • Neither side has managed to score more than two goals in a match in their last 15 encounters since Manchester City's 5-1 win in May 2004.

Everton

  • Everton have failed to score more than once in their last 10 Premier League fixtures.
  • The Toffees are the only Premier League side to use all three subs in all 22 games this season.
  • The 78 shots on target Everton have allowed their opponents to register against them this season is the lowest total in the league.
  • Louis Saha has not scored a Premier League goal for 942 minutes.
  • David Moyes is still one short of his 150th Premier League victory as Everton manager.
  • Phil Neville could make his 650th club career appearance.

Manchester City

  • City are set to start February as Premier League leaders - the last eight Premier League titles have been won by sides who topped the table at the start of February.
  • David Silva's 12 assists this season is five more than any other Premier League player has managed.
  • The Citizens have scored 60 league goals this season, the same amount as they managed in the whole of last season.
  • None of Manchester City's next six matches are against a team in the current top half.
  • Victory would be Roberto Mancini's 50th in the Premier League.

Venue: Old Trafford Date: Tuesday, 31 January Kick-off: 2000 GMT

TEAM NEWS

Rio Ferdinand could start for Manchester United, having been on the bench for the FA Cup defeat by Liverpool following a back problem.

Nani remains sidelined and Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones are unlikely to be rushed back from ankle injuries.

Matthew Etherington is a doubt for Stoke after suffering a groin injury in the FA Cup win over Derby.

Cameron Jerome is in line for his first league start of the year after scoring in that tie.

MATCH PREVIEW

It's the first time in the Premier League era that Manchester United have been out of the Champions League and FA Cup by this stage of the season. But they'll have no time to feel sorry for themselves and lick their wounds against Stoke City. The physical challenge of the visitors will provide no respite. That's the way Sir Alex Ferguson would have wanted it.

His players must respond now or their title challenge will wilt and their time at Old Trafford could draw to a close. The manager will be examining closely the desire of all of his players as he continues to rebuild.

United haven't been able to name a consistent back four at any stage. It'll be interesting to see how they handle Stoke's aerial threat

History suggests they should bounce back. They are unbeaten against Stoke at Old Trafford since April 1976. Ryan Giggs was just two years old!

Stoke are marching on in two cup competitions still, but their long season is beginning to affect their league form. They've been playing competitively for six months now. It's showing, with just one league win in six games.

But they are still having a tremendous season and can certainly threaten United at set pieces and down their left flank if Matty Etherington plays. Peter Crouch and the tireless Jon Walters will press the home defence, which continues to badly miss Nemanja Vidic.

Injuries have undermined United's season so far. They haven't been able to name a consistent back four at any stage. It'll be interesting to see how they handle Stoke's aerial threat after Andy Carroll had one of his best Liverpool performances against the United back four at the weekend.

Wayne Rooney hasn't scored against Stoke but United need him fit to lead the attack. Danny Welbeck looked raw as a lone front runner at Anfield. United have had their critics this season, but they've still won 10 of their last 13 league games and have the magic eye over Stoke. A home win for me - but only just.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • United have won the last seven meetings at home, scoring 20 goals and conceding one.
  • Stoke are winless in 10 league visits to Old Trafford since a 1-0 victory in April 1976.
  • The Potters earned their first Premier League point against United in September's reverse fixture, with Peter Crouch's header earning a 1-1 draw.

Manchester United

  • United have yet to lose after opening the scoring this season (W16, D2), but they are winless in the four games in which they conceded the first goal.
  • They have kept a clean sheet in half of their 22 league matches, more than any other top-flight side.
  • The Red Devils have scored in each of their last 41 league matches at Old Trafford since a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in December 2009. If they score against Stoke it will equal their top-flight club record, set between February 1955 and February 1957.
  • Antonio Valencia has provided eight assists in his last eight league matches.

Stoke

  • Stoke have only won one of their last six league matches, averaging a point per game during that run.
  • However, they have taken 10 points out a possible 15 from their last five away matches.
  • They have been awarded five penalties this season, the same number as in the previous two Premier League campaigns put together.
  • Midfielder Dean Whitehead has made 399 career league appearances.
  • Rory Delap's next appearance will be his 350th in the Premier League, Robert Huth will make his 150th career league start and Matthew Etherington is poised to make his 100th league appearance for Stoke.
